Latha Bealltainn or Beltane, is the Gaelic May Day festival marking the beginning of Summer when fires are lit in celebration of the brightest days and greener pastures. In old Irish, Belltaine is derived from bil-tene meaning 'lucky fire,' the heat of which warded off malady and the death grip of the year's darker months.
